Finding new homes...
Hope this letter finds you well and enjoying 2010 thus far.
Many thanks to Deborah and Bill Keyes who sent us a photograph of what Deborah calls The John Tolmay Dining Room. The Banker, The Rhino Study , Mirage and The War Department have found a wonderful place to reside in the Keyes beautiful home on their Ranch in the Texas hill country.
Dave Mathieson in Denver, who has The Banker, The Rhino Study and The Elephant Study on his walls already, will have me turn the head on a second Elephant Study so that the two heads can be mounted facing inwards. Dave also wants Whispers On The Wind so on my return to the USA from Uganda at the end of July I will be revisiting all 700lb's of this very large piece.
New pieces...
Presently I have a Lord Derby Eland just about ready to go to the Foundry. For some months I have had a mother and calf Giraffe standing quietly in the studio. I have kept them in the clay while I get my head around some adjustments I need to make - not quite happy with it yet. The Eland will get your attention especially if you are familiar with either the Lord Derby and or the Cape Eland.
If you have a space in your house or your office that you just don't know what to do with, maybe a sculpture would fill that space in style? I am happy to oblige with ideas and dialogue for commissioned pieces.
Watch this space...
Finally, July sees the launch of a new line of my artwork. Watch this space...
Until next time, keep well.

News update - December 2009
As 2009 draws the curtain on the days I have occasion to stop and reflect on the events of these past years. The years in America have allowed me to progress in the world of art and I have grown to accept that as much as I long to be back to the dust and smells of Africa I must allow that I have a place in the art world and as such I need to live the mix of two continents and be content.
As the winter creeps up outside here in Montana I watch with envy the birds as they gather for the journey to the sun in the south. There was a time here when I was without options and simply buckled up and accepted the reality of the life I was forced to live in the USA. 2009 has made it clear to me that in fact due to the new project in Uganda I too can emulate the birds and fly to the sun.
This feeling of release has made my art work take on a new life and instead of watching the approaching winter with foreboding I have no fear of it and I shall just let it happen because it is merely natures way.
This last winter our daughter and her partner visited from New Zealand and I realised that despite the winter is not my bag... for Georgie and Dave is grist for the mill as they skied the slopes of Montana and Idaho with a joy born of a love for the snow and the cold. This summer our son visited us from Australia for one precious day and we did what he loves more than anything and that is to fish. Both of us enjoy fly-fishing and we spent that precious day casting the Smith River. My wife loves Montana and of course this helps to settle the alien nature of the land in my mind.
I begin to realise that despite the choice was not and is not mine, I have plenty to be grateful for. In February I became a citizen of America thus this country and the friends that made it possible for me to survive here owe Di and myself nothing, and I in return owe so much to America and my American friends. Let the snow fly, I can move away if the mood takes me. Please find Di and I in Dallas and Reno where we have 5 new pieces to show you.
ART ON THE PLAZA - June 12th, 2008
Sheridan, Wyoming
Sheridan's 2008 'Celebrate the Arts' was held at the Sheridan County Fulmer Library on June 12th with the introduction of 27 new on-loan sculptures and the artists who created them. Each artist received a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Sheridan and the Public Arts Committee recognising with gratitude their participation in the 2008 on-loan exhibition.
The Public Arts Committee selects a number of sculptures every year to display in downtown Sheridan. All of the sculptures are for sale and through the years 27 have been purchased by individuals, businesses or organizations and donated to the city to create a permanent art collection. Several sculptures have also been acquired for private ownership by businesses or individuals.
John had two sculptures accepted this year;
Kilimanjaro Bull, now situated on the corner of Mandell and Main Streets outside the Sheridan State Bank.
Rain Dancer is situated on the Corner of Works and Main Streets.
ARTS IN THE HILLS - June 28 & 29th, 2008
Hill City, South Dakota
John was one of twenty five invited artists exhibiting at the juried show 'Sculpture in the Hills' held on June 28th & 29th in Hill City, South Dakota. This was the Hill City Arts Council's first 'Sculpture in the Hills' and their mission is to enrich the cultural life of the area by nurturing and supporting excellence in the arts.
The artists featured covered a wide spectrum of mediums from bronzes to stone carving, wood carving & metal works. John was the only African Wildlife bronze artist and a great deal of interest was shown in his work. The show was well attended & the organisers should be congratulated. Bringing the Little One Home, Nemesis, Mukanga Bull Tanking Up and Pachedu are now on consignment at Dakota Nature and Art Gallery, 216 Main Street, Hill City, South Dakota 57745. |

I am very happy to have completed my first American animal - the Bison - which I have titled High Plains Drifter. He lives under a new collection called American Art. I have a number of other pieces sketched and planned and look forward to adding them to the collection.
I have now set up home in White Sulphur Springs, MT and hope to resume sculpting new pieces shortly. I will be attending the sixteenth Loveland Sculpture Invitational Show and Sale in Loveland, CO which runs over August 10th, 11th and 12th.
This annual show which hosts over 500 artists brings together sculptors from around the country and abroad. Profits made from the show are used to fund sculpture projects for the city of Loveland and to establish a fund for the study of Visual Arts.
